Historic Haines City is known as the Heart of Florida because of its central location along Interstate 4, near the intersection of Highway 27 and Highway 17/92.

First platted in 1885, the city was named after a railroad official, Colonel Henry Haines, as residents hoped to convince him to make the town a train stop. A few months later, the coveted railroad station was built here.

Haines City’s downtown area has been named a Florida Main Street. Under the program, it under went major rehabilitation that has resulted in a well-designed neighborhood of landscaped streets, with excellently preserved historic sites and plenty of new shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

In addition to its prosperity, Haines City also boasts a natural beauty that serves as backdrop for popular outdoor activities, such as horseback riding, golf, biking, hiking and fishing. The city is home to several parks and golf courses, and is just a short drive away from some of Florida’s famous beaches.

Attractions and amenities

  • Downtown Haines City is the community hub. Several historic landmarks can be found here, including the Palm Crest Hotel (formerly Polk Hotel), which has been the tallest structure in town since the 1920s, the Old Presbyterian Church, and the Haines City Community Center (formerly Clay Cut Centre).
  • Must try restaurants include Nikko’s Egg City, Manny’s Original Chophouse, and Big Tony’s Pizza, while retail destinations include Heart of Florida Shopping Center and the wide array of quaint shops and boutiques found downtown. Downtown Haines City also boasts a number of cinemas, as well as a weekly Farmers’ Market.
  • Lake Eva Park is a favorite community gathering place. Located along the shores of scenic Lake Eva, it features tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds, bicycle and running trails, an open area for concerts, and a soccer field. It also has an aquatic center with water slides and other features, as well as a banquet hall.
  • True Blue Winery in nearby Davenport is a popular spot for residents and visitors. This cozy establishment features indoor and outdoor dining areas amid a blueberry farm, and is famous for its wood-fired brick oven pizza, as well as the annual Blueberry Festival which it hosts.
